A Functional Comparison of the Domestic Cat Bitter Receptors and their Human Orthologs

We know cats don’t taste sweet flavors like we do. But what about bitter? AFB’s ground-breaking feline taste receptor research sheds light.

AFB’s scientific feline research published in the June issue of the open access journal BMC Neuroscience focused on better understanding what cats find bitter and how it influences their food selection. Dr. Michelle Sandau, AFB’s Senior Basic Research Scientist, led a team that identified and characterized the responses of two feline bitter receptors and compared those responses to their human counterparts.

Their results have implications for improving cat food palatant design by altering flavors to precisely match a cat’s sense of taste.
