Cue the Cat: The Visual Dimension of Flavor Preference

Cue the Cat: The Visual Dimension of Flavor Preference

If you know what to look for, cats will “tell” you what they like—very quickly and with great precision. AFB’s Nancy Rawson explains.

What easily observable feline behaviors are indicators that cats enjoy one taste or food more than another? At the 2014 Pet Food Association of Canada (PFAC) Fall Conference, AFB director of basic research Nancy Rawson shared research that indicates sniffing and switching behavior are clear predictors of preference. Results showed:

• 91% agreement between first sniff and first choice
• Insights into how cats choose between tastes
• Implications for how a diet will perform across multiple meals within a day
