Kibble Shape and Its Effect on Feline Palatability

Kibble Shape and Its Effect on Feline Palatability

Star, triangle, disc or cylinder: Do cats care what shape their food takes? AFB International researchers set out to answer this question—and the answer was loud and clear.

With all other factors being equal, which kibble shape do cats prefer? And if they prefer one over another, is texture a factor? AFB researchers designed an experiment to look at five different shapes—cross/star, triangle, flat disc, cylinder and triangle with a hole—and measured five different texture parameters. Then they engaged in 10 two-bowl tests with 25 cats over two days to look at palatability measures. The results clearly indicated:

• Shape drives palatability more than texture does
• Cats preferred two shapes over the other three
• Of the two shapes cats preferred most, one has significant advantages
