Meal Particle Size & Its Effect on Feline Palatability, Processing Parameters and Texture

Meal Particle Size & Its Effect on Feline Palatability, Processing Parameters and Texture

If one food breaks down more easily than another, will cats prefer the former? AFB International researchers put that question to the test in this insight-yielding research study.

Because cats' jaws lack molars and lateral movement, they can’t grind their food—making food texture and crushability important. AFB researchers compared two disc-shaped kibbles varying only in their meal processing: one ground once, the other twice. The results offer significant insights for the pet food industry in terms of cat food palatability, as well as:

• Key processing parameters—and potential costs
• Texture related to fracturing
• Additional opportunities for texture research using different shapes and ingredients
